Coverlet, Duvet, Quilt, Comforter: What's the Difference?
Duvet definition: A duvet is made from cloth sewn to form a large bag, then filled with down or other soft materials. A duvet is used as the top layer of bedding to keep the sleeper warm as they rest. It has become a little harder to define duvet because some use the word interchangeably with comforter. In fact, some dictionaries include the word comforter in the entry, as a synonym. But in fact, the two pieces of bedding are not the same. The word duvet comes from the french for down, and down is still a very popular filling for duvets.
There's a reason why the bedding section in the department store is so large: there are dozens of different types of pillows, sheets, and bed coverings. Not only are there different types of items, but then, they come in different colors, prints, and sizes. It can be a bit confusing learning all of these different terms, but knowing the definitions will help you when you are shopping and need to find the right item for your bed. Whether it's linens, bed coverings, pillows or the insert you use with a duvet cover, knowing these terms will help you create the perfect bed. Top sheet or flat sheet: Commonly used in North America, but uncommon in Europe, a top sheet, also known as a flat sheet, is the sheet that separates you from your comforter, blanket or quilt. In Europe and very slowly catching on in the United States , the duvet cover takes the place of the top sheet.
Duvet or comforter? That is the question. When it comes to choosing your bedding, what is the right choice for you? Do you hate making your bed? Do you prefer ease of washing?
As during warmer weather, the sheets go on the bed first, offering a sense of your comforter on top of the blanket to keep it from getting squished down under.

What Is a Duvet Cover?
Is it "acceptable" to use a comforter dirctly on top of your sheets? Without a blanket in between? Peggy - acceptable to whom? I would use whatever I like and whatever feels comfortable and is hygienic. Do you have a comforter cover for the comforter, or is it 'naked'? If the former, you don't even need sheets, but if the latter, a sheet will be good.
