Knitting in the Old Way: Designs and Techniques from Ethnic Sweaters by Priscilla Gibson-RobertsTake my review with a grain of salt, because I didnt actually use the patterns which comprised probably half of the book. I got this from the library, so next time I *do* make a sweater, perhaps Ill get it again, well see.
That said, it was really interesting to learn more about the history of knitting worldwide and specifically sweater constructions history. Yes, it has a history! I was surprised to learn that clothing/shirts/tunics was traditionally knit in the round (for some reason I thought that was a recent invention), and that sweaters as we know them today are relatively recent (1800s!). If you arent planning to use the book to actually make a sweater, then it isnt worth buying, and you should probably just borrow it from someone/where, since the history part is only a portion of the book.

Knitting In The Old Way is a "hot-to" book of instruction and example of the fine tradition of knitting without recourse to a line-by-line printed pattern. Knitting In The Old Way shares the simple fundamentals of design and construction allowing the knitter to draft their own styles, chart their own patterns, create their own heirlooms. Brilliant multi-colored patterns of the Scandinavian countries, intriguing motifs of the Shetland Islands, and rich sculptural knits of northern Europe are covered in detail -- th history as well as the how-to. Profuse and illustrative photos and drawings guide the knitter through the basic steps and special tricks of the trade that knitters all over the world have developed down through the years. Pricilla Gibson-Roberts' own interpretations of classic styles are shown in full color, as well.
