Song of the South: Randy Newman’s Good Old Boys traces the evolution of Newman’s album from its roots in an abandoned project titled, Johnny Cutler’s Birthday;” recounts his arduous journey to bring his reimagined concept to fruition; catalogs its cast of misfits and misanthropes; and explores its central themes in the context of Newman’s half-century-long career.
It’s a compelling story enhanced by the author’s personal interviews with the key members of Newman’s production team, as well as by his unique access to previously unavailable material.

The film takes place in the southern United States during the Reconstruction era , a period of American history after the end of the American Civil War and the abolition of slavery. The story follows seven-year-old Johnny Bobby Driscoll who is visiting his grandmother's plantation for an extended stay. Johnny befriends Uncle Remus, one of the workers on the plantation, and takes joy in hearing his tales about the adventures of Br'er Rabbit , Br'er Fox, and Br'er Bear.

The live actors provide a sentimental frame story, in which Uncle Remus relates the folk tales of the adventures of Br'er Rabbit and his friends. These anthropomorphic animal characters appear in animation. The hit song from the film was " Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah ", which won the Academy Award for Best Song and is frequently used as part of Disney's montage themes, and which has become widely used in popular culture. The film inspired the Disney theme park attraction Splash Mountain. The setting of the film is the deep South of the Reconstruction era.

In fact, Mr. Baskett wasn't the first live actor hired by Disney. Still, as folklorist Patricia A. Turner writes: "Disney's 20th century re-creation of Harris's frame story is much more heinous than the original. The days on the plantation located in "the United States of Georgia" begin and end with unsupervised Blacks singing songs about their wonderful home as they march to and from the fields. Disney and company made no attempt to to render the music in the style of the spirituals and work songs that would have been sung during this era. They provided no indication regarding the status of the Blacks on the plantation.
