The Passion by Jeanette Winterson

Jeanette Winterson’s novels have established her as one of the most important young writers in world literature. The Passion is perhaps her most highly acclaimed work, a modern classic that confirms her special claim on the novel. Set during the tumultuous years of the Napoleonic Wars, The Passion intertwines the destinies of two remarkable people: Henri, a simple French soldier, who follows Napoleon from glory to Russian ruin; and Villanelle, the red-haired, web-footed daughter of a Venetian boatman, whose husband has gambled away her heart. In Venice’s compound of carnival, chance, and darkness, the pair meet their singular destiny.

In her unique and mesmerizing voice, Winterson blends reality with fantasy, dream, and imagination to weave a hypnotic tale with stunning effects.

In the book, a young Polish girl named Wanda Petronski goes to a school in an American town, in Connecticut, where the other children see her as "different" and mock her. Peggy and Maddy are the two girls who often make fun of her by asking her the number of dresses she had. The book centers on Wanda Petronski, a poor and friendless Polish-American girl. Her teacher, outwardly kind, puts her in the worst seat in the classroom and she does not say anything when her schoolmates tease her. One day, after Wanda's classmates laugh at her funny last name and the faded blue dress she wears to school every day, Wanda claims to own one hundred dresses, all lined up in her closet at her worn-down house.

These notes were contributed by members of the GradeSaver community. The Hundred Dresses was written in by Eleanor Estes but is still as popular today as it was when it was published. The story is based on Estes' own experiences; whilst in elementary school she had a classmate who was teased because she wore the same dress to school every day, and because she, like the character Wanda in the novel, had a Polish last name that was almost unpronounceable. At the time, around , there were not many Polish people where Estes grew up, in West Haven, Connecticut. Of course the classmate had only one dress which is why she wore it every day. In the middle of the school year she relocated to New York City and Estes was never able to apologize for the teasing.

I am a very privileged person. Poverty was just something I read about in my many, many books. I recently had a conversation with my eleven-year-old sister about why certain people act the way they do. This winner of the Newberry Honor is a timeless short chapter book for kids. The story revolves around Polish immigrant, Wanda Petronski, who is ridiculed by her classmates for wearing the same faded blue dress to school every day. To avoid bullying, Wanda claims she has a hundred dresses at home. After falling in love with the BBC miniseries , I read this novel during a road trip.
