This course prepares you to read more deeply and write more clearly about works of literature. Through an engaging collection of videos, authentic readings, and support material from a variety of sources, you will learn to appreciate literature from different genres. This course will focus on reading, interpreting and writing about fiction and gothic literature. You will broaden your vocabulary while you sharpen your academic and creative writing skills. Interaction with other students will help you to refine your thinking about the reading and writing as well. You will learn to write under time pressure, and have the opportunity to complete practice assignments that are similar to those you will find on the AP examination.
Advanced Placement AP. If you're planning to take the AP English Literature and Composition exam, you'll need to get familiar with what to expect from the test. The AP Literature Exam is a three-hour exam that contains two sections. First is an hour-long, question multiple choice section, and then a two hour, three question free-response section. The exam tests your ability to analyze works and excerpts of literature and cogently communicate that analysis in essay form. You can expect to see excerpts of prose and poetry. You will, in general, not be given an author, date, or title for these works, although occasionally the title of a poem is given.

The College Board does not restrict courses by grade. Students learn and apply methods of literary analysis and write with a variety of purposes to increase precision in expression. The College Board publishes changing information about all AP courses and examinations on its web site.

Many schools offer this course primarily to juniors and the AP English Literature and Composition course to seniors. Other schools reverse the order, and some offer both courses to both juniors and seniors. The College Board advises that students choosing AP English Language and Composition be interested in studying and writing various kinds of analytic or persuasive essays on non-fiction topics, while students choosing AP English Literature and Composition be interested in studying literature of various periods and genres fiction, poetry, drama and using this wide reading knowledge in discussions of literary topics.
