Wonder by R.J. Palacio

I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.

August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER, now a #1 New York Times bestseller and included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list, begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.

Palacio, still needs to finesse something of a costume change when she switches between roles. If we can understand bullies and even find a little compassion, even a little tenderness, we can figure out how to fix the problem from both sides. Interspersed throughout, for each month, are updates on Wonder characters — narrators Auggie, Summer, and Jack, but also others, among them Julian.

Catching Up with R.J. Palacio – and Raquel Jaramillo

This uplifting and moving novel stars August Pullman, a year-old boy with a severe facial disfigurement. When he joins mainstream school after years of home-schooling, he has to contend with friendships, fall-outs and bullying, but manages to maintain an upbeat attitude throughout it all. Find out what we learned from Wonder by R. August may have an unusual appearance, but his schoolmates soon learn that he's an upbeat, fun and kind kid, and that his appearance has absolutely nothing to do with his personality. The book starkly reveals the senseless, groundless nature of the terrible bullying August has to endure, for he has such a likeable, friendly nature and there is simply no reason for the cruel comments he has to cope with. August is a sparky kid who's full of life and optimism.
