Family tree Poem

Trees (poem)

Kilmer is most remembered for "Trees", which has been the subject of frequent parodies and references in popular culture. Kilmer's work is often disparaged by critics and dismissed by scholars as being too simple and overly sentimental, and that his style was far too traditional and even archaic. Literary critic Guy Davenport considers it "the one poem known by practically everybody". The location for a specific tree as the possible inspiration for the poem has been claimed by several places and institutions connected to Kilmer's life; among these are Rutgers University , the University of Notre Dame , and towns across the country that Kilmer visited. However, Kilmer's eldest son, Kenton, declares that the poem does not apply to any one tree—that it could apply equally to any. According to Kilmer's oldest son, Kenton, "Trees" was written on 2 February , when the family resided in Mahwah, New Jersey , in the northwestern corner of Bergen County.

Sunbonneted, a baby in your arms, Your home for months, a jolting wagon bed, How staunchly you suppressed the deep alarms That grew with every mile you forged ahead! You watched the prairie stretch day after day, An endless sea of grass, vast sinister, Your heart remembering clean salt, sea spray As trail dust clogged your throat, made your eyes blur. You tried to face the future unafraid, Not yielding to the doubts of yesterday, Your lips with outward smiles while you prayed Kind providence to guide you on your way. You lacked possessions, yet had love to see Children were your true immortality. One tree outlives the mighty oak Because it's made of special folk, Through generations changing form, Providing shelter from life's storm. Our parents' parents and before, Who may have lived on distant shores, They root our lives in memories; We're nourished by their histories.

GAYLE ANNE GOFF

A tree is like a family it starts out very small but it soon begins to grow and the family too also grows. The tree starts out with small branches. A family ita a child. Soon the tree has been generated with new branches and too the family expands not with branches, but generations. Their both so much a like in so many ways. And generate many new branch and many more generations too come as the tree grows old some branches will die and fall off. When the generations of a family get old they too will die off.
