Okay, so Tom Riddle was a bad kid who grew up to become Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort was super powerful and super mean.
The Dark Lord had, years previously, chosen to create Horcruxes - tiny bits of your soul that are stored inside an object to ensure your survival. Harry then spends the best part of 18 months tracking down the items, getting rid of them one by one before besting Voldemort himself during an epic final showdown at the battle of Hogwarts. We now rank each Horcrux by how difficult it was to obtain and destroy - starting with the easiest to the hardest. By the time Harry Potter becomes aware of Voldemort possessing Horcruxes, one of them is already destroyed. Dumbledore, in his attempts to destroy the Horcrux, becomes struck down by a curse that will kill him within 12 months.
The ring is no longer a Horcrux. Tom wore the ring openly for some time afterward at Hogwarts, but apparently after he turned it into a Horcrux he ceased wearing it. Dumbledore found the ring magically concealed in the ruins of the Gaunts' house. Dumbledore retained possession of the ring and took to wearing it for a time after its destruction, which left the stone cracked down the middle. The black stone of the ring is the Resurrection Stone, making it the only Horcrux that is also a Hallow. Tags: black cursed family family heirloom gold large powerful ugly.
