Book Review #111 - Embers Of War by Gareth L. Powell
Where Loyalties Lie by Rob J. Hayes
This particular one was chosen by the folks over at Fantasy Book Review. Lovable, friendly…er…murdering, thieving, slimy pirates. At the start, I do want to say that this book does contain a few graphic scenes of violence, sex, rape, and heavy swearing. Nearly everyone is despicable in this novel in some way or another. And yet the whole thing was quite good. The book is about pirates doing, well, pirate things.
Author Rob J. Hayes, after his successful completion of his award-winning grimdark trilogy, The Ties That Bind, now continues the saga of First Earth with several crossover characters in Where Loyalties Lie, book one of Best Laid Plans. Everybody knows Captain Drake Morrass is out only for himself. As the fires of a dying city burn on a distant shore, Drake sees an opportunity to unite the other pirate captains under his flag and claim a crown for himself. If he is to succeed, he will need allies, and the Oracle named Keelin Stillwater, the best swordsman in the isles, as his right hand.
Cancel anytime. The job sounded simple enough. Rid the village of an ogre and rescue the girl. In return, the local lord would overlook that ugly business in the church. Before he crossed paths with the headless rider.

This novel was assigned to me as part of Fantasy Book Review's contribution to the Self Published Fantasy Blog Off and it has progressed to our internal semi-final stage. I think many fantasy readers will wish to read this based on the next two words: grimdark pirates! The two main characters in this pirate-tastic tale are the legendary Captains' Drake Morrass, who's only out for himself, and Keelin Stillwater, the best swordsman within the pirate isles. The two become unlikely allies as a larger threat beckons. The Empire is burning cities, killing women and children, and are essentially looking to eradicate piracy and all involved whilst manning the largest and greatest warships ever seen.
