5 Tips for Camping and Backpacking the Coast to Coast Walk

The Coast to Coast walk was my first hike in England. While I have a fair bit of experience in Ireland, France, Spain and Morocco, I didn't know what to expect.

Did the walk in 14 days in June and loved it. We did a self guided walk with NorthWest Walks - they booked the accommodation and luggage Obviously, you are exposed to all the elements of the weather and there is no doubt We had previously done the Pennine Way and Offas Dyke and this walk is right up with those two as a must-do classic. This classic long distance walk was devised by Alfred Wainwright in It is a classic and quite rightly has become one of the most popular long distance walks in the British isles. There are a number of reasons for this. First, the walk has distinct starting and finishing points as it starts on the west coast of Northern England and finishes on the east coast of Northern England. Hence the obvious title 'Coast to Coast'. Secondly, the walk makes its way through three of the finest national parks in the country, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. All three parks are distinctly different.

The Coast to Coast walk was my first hike in England. While I personally like the challenge, I usually like to get to my next stop by 5pm at the latest and get time to relax and unwind in the evening. The start of the walk is on the west coast of England and the Lake District in the village of St Bees. The train journey from Manchester airport is quite pleasant and the village itself is lovely although the main village is inland, 10min walk from a great beach where I started the walk. The Coast to Coast walk starts gently on a nice green footpath heading northward, before veering east.
